Open Thread on GOOD Music to Check Out...

Okay - so after trying a thread for bad music to continue the hater brigade, I quickly realized that this would be a better idea (thanks, DD). So go at it, folks. Share your passions, your finds, your secret faves, your oldies but goodies...

Nickel Creek- a "newgrass" trio of smokingly gifted classically trained musicians that just rock out and have some beautiful material

Interesting! My addition for now is Kevin So, a folksy Asian American singer-songwriter who sings from the heart and has been doing it for a long time.

Cool, I'll have to check it out!

I recently refueled my love of Tears For Fears. Man, those guys were ahead of their time...

true, true.

You can check out kevin here. There should be some songs on the music player. I like his style and stuff. Wrote about him here, too.

Interesting stuff, and I'll definitely check it all out. I have been grooving to Zap Mama a lot lately, as well as some old beasties... other than that, nothing too bright, bold, or brash...

though I *have* recently acquired the first 8 Sabbath albums, but my cd burner seems to be having problems, so it's all in MP3 format...

Nancy Wilson's acoustic cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes"

(shivers, absolute shivers)

yes - pretty please??

I have a mix that Prodigy did of beats that's actually really good. I think that it was called Dirtchamber sessions, and they got all kinds of shit in there - including jane's addiction, old school beats, and some garage/breakbeat. I can share a burned copy, since I bought this one...

Definitely can share-- what format do you guys prefer?

MP3 or AAC is good for me! :)

no problem! Let me get the India Day show out of the way (shameless plug and reminder) and I'll get to it.

Rage- that $$ counter on the sidebar is truly horrifying!

the sooner you profess your love for Itunes, the easier your life will be, Saurav ;)

Cool. thanks, dd. Yeah - the $$$ thing really got to me, so I thought I should share it. Plus I feel like I'm not finding enough links to put up so this is at least something.

Can't you convert from AAC to MP3 on iTunes? That's what I thought, but can't remember.

I know you can convert MP3 to AAC, but I'm not 100% sure about the reverse. I *think* so, but I'll check this weekend...

Rage said...

okay. not sure either - but will definitely look forward to it in any format!

saurav - you need a ballad or something after the treatment over at SM? Alternadesi time!

Anonymous said...

I ought to make you guys meet me in the city to get the song ;)

A ballad? Hm, I would have recommended a nice power-anthem for Saurav. Something like Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It" :D

or we could write haiku for you?

Rage said...

I rather like "You Can't Keep Me Down" by Suicidal Tendencies... but that's just my opinion. So when are we kicking it with Alternadesi already? Not that I have time to post much - as you can tell from this spot in the last month...

Rage said...

I definitely hear you on that...

maybe rather than a blog or similar format, it could be more of an Alternadesi Watch. Pointing the alternadesi masses toward cool and alternative things. Things that would make aunties and FOBs cringe, but that appeal to the alternative-walle among us...

Just a thought. Like you, Saurav, I worry that blogging is an unhealthy idea for me, at least right now. Check out angryasianman.com-- something along the lines of that, but with a bit more personal touch by the Alternadesi ground crew...?

and yeah, answer our emails, Rage :)

Hmm - I think that I can't commit to another blog space myself - really thinking about how to make this into something interesting that isn't altogether over-consuming at the moment. And I DO think that another space is necessary, if even to bring together more progressively minded folks, regardless of immigration history/status and age... Just don't know what the next step is.

Okay, ok. I'll read my email and respond more regularly! Sheesh!

I definitely want to have a participatory site - comments are important. Truly open dialogue is a good thing. Dissent breeds stronger movements.

I don't know fark. Decentralized is good, and just because we HAPPEN to post on a community blog doesn't mean that we have all the answers. Shit, we may have NO answers, but through the process of unearthing issues, be able to connect some folks to one another and work things through together. That's what I'm interested in.

Oh. that's what you wrote already, Saurav. Oh well. Agreed.

And definitely - let's just keep it public. though comments to this effect, on this particular post, may be hard to see. Still - not exactly closed doors. :)

Yes, the downside to AAM is a lack of comment feature. I think he does it to keep the racist haters out, since it's just one guy, as opposed to a blog-panel. That is the personal touch, which I mentioned-- being able to interact and not just post without audience feedback.

I think comments are key, else there is no discussion.

i know i know, i've been less than helpful with my gift for stating the obvious. it's been a really excruciatingly heinous week. i'm chomping to clear my head for a few days.

will take lots of vitamins and hopefully be more useful next week.

Rage said...

Sigh - yes indeed. What do we do now. Conceptually, right there with y'all... but practically, almost over my head in work...

Rage said...

I think that's really interesting - I would have to get a more clear idea of it, to wrap my head around what it would mean and how it would look. And if we'd be able to kick people off for being too boring.

so something like naachgaana, but not exclusively filmi topics?
