Def Leppard and Megadeth as Biters

I was listening to the first Def Leppard album, On Through The Night today and noticed another interesting coincidence. Or BITE. Before you start laughing out loud, Def Leppard used to be one of the premiere bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) before they went ultra-pop. Come on - you know of other examples (can anyone say Starship Jefferson Airplane? On Through the Night is a true testament to that initial spirit, parallel in many ways to Iron Maiden's debut, though less punk-influenced. Anyway, so I'm listening to "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down" and lo and behold! The melody line from the title track of Countdown to Extinction by Megadeth falls out of thin air. I knew that it was a familiar tune when I'd first heard the latter album in '92, but couldn't really place it. So there you are: Dave sings about "Back in the Day" on his last album, but he's a biter like the rest of them.

UPDATED
Still – you have to give him a lot of credit for calling it like it is with “Never Be Me” about the self-indulgent therapy and filming sessions that were Metallica’s last project, the documentary Some Kind of Monster. I thought it was great for him to be on it though, and the drama thereafter was even better. Mustaine basically stated that he was misquoted and it wasn't cool that Hetfield was nowhere to be found during the interview/reconcilliation. Not to mention that he still thinks that Ulrich is a totally lame-ass and control freak.

No making fun of Def Leppard allowed!

While they had a couple really stinky bomb-albums, they got back to the original feel with Euphoria. "Slang" and "x" really sucked really sucked though, excepting maybe 1 song apiece.

Okay - we'll have to get into this, though I feel very weird to be talking about hair metal, which I loathe with a passion. Def Leppard was actually a completely different group than the one that we all grew up with on Pop 80s radio - they were actually respectable in the late 70s, and part of a movement of new british heavy metal (NWOBM) that launched the long career of Iron Maiden, and also spawned many many other bands with animal names that went nowhere (Praying Mantis, anyone?). For more details, check out this great site that has more information than you could possibly want.

Skid Row, notorious for their pretty boy frontman Sebastian Bach (great name, too), came on the scene with "Youth Gone Wild" and "18 and Life", not to mention the ballad "I Remember You." They faded out of the mainstream soon after, as the nation's infatuation with hair groups like Poison and Warrant soon wore off. But they were still creating music, and from what I read, they got harder, meaner, and less cheesy.

Saurav - you can go off on Warrant all you want.

ok to make fun of:
Trixter
Firehouse
Steelheart (the one with the screeching ballad chorus, "I'll never let you go")
Warrant (to hell with Jani Lane)
Poison
Winger

Show a little respect for Faster Pussycat because they were clever and naughty ;)

Well said, Rage-- Def Leppard was completely something different when the first album came out. Great stuff, not like Adrenalize (weak but ok album)

Does anyone else think Shania Twain records sound just like sell-out days Def Leppard, with a fiddle and girl vox?

That's a good list, and I'd add Ratt, WASP, Motley Crue, and a whole slew of others that I've worked hard to forget.

I love the Shania Twain Reference! Do you guys know that she released three versions of her album UP? One was country, one was "adult comtemporary/pop" and the third, available only in Europe, was actually "World", which meant that it was bollywood choruses. I'll try to share a tune if I can find one, but how weird is that? I actually liked it.

equally cool as the 3 "up" albums is the fact that when we routed her N. American tour that year, we did 2 stops in every city. One night was country night and one night was pop. She took 2 band out on the road, everything. Brilliant marketing!

Mr. Big actually had some musicality to them-- don't judge based on that crappy "To be with you" song... Ok the singer had a poufy mullet perm, but they were real musicians.

Nelson on the other hand needs a good beatdown. Slaughter, too.

Whitesnake. They sucked.

I agree about Mr. Big. Billy Sheehan was one of the most amazing bass players, but he decided to go with the pop outfit for a spell.

Nelson is a good one. Slaughter. Ugh. Hanoi Rocks? Great White (bastards behind the wall of fire that killed so many fans in New England), White Lion... ugh. Too many to beat down.

Whitesnake was interesting, because they had Steve Vai on guitar for some time, and Coverdale is like Robert Plant-lite.

This is fun!

Interesting. I think that last comment is a form of spamming, through comments. Anyone else have to deal with this before? And here I am thinking that I'm being showered with praise and affection (I mean, aside from my fave 2 readers!).

Okay. This is getting annoying. Show yourself, anonymous!

That may just be why I have a hard time adding Whitesnake to the bunch. Such classy objectification...

ok ok waive Whitesnake. And the Coverdale-Page project was pretty good, too.

Steve Vai, now there's a monster. And the only reason I won't penalize David Lee Roth's first 2 solo albums-- Steve Vai & Billy Sheehan in the band. Nice.

Wow - good hair metal chops, dd. I'm impressed. :)
